Gareth Southgate resigns after Euro 2024 final defeat

Gareth Southgate, manager of the England men’s national football team, has resigned following the team’s narrow defeat in the Euro 2024 final.

The 53-year-old announced his decision on Tuesday (16 July), two days after England fell 2-1 to Spain.

This marked Southgate’s second consecutive Euros final defeat, having lost on penalties to Italy at Wembley Stadium back in 2021.

Southgate departs after a commendable eight-year tenure, overseeing 102 games for the Three Lions.

His contract was due to expire later in 2024. He becomes the only England manager besides 1966 World Cup winner Alf Ramsey to lead the men’s team to a major tournament final in the post-Ramsey era.

Southgate’s reign wasn’t limited to the Euros. He guided England to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and the quarter-finals in 2022, fostering renewed fan optimism.

“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England,” said Southgate. “It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all but it’s time for change and for a new chapter.”

“I look forward to watching and celebrating as the players go on to create more special memories and to connect and inspire the nation as we know they can. Thank you, England, for everything,” he concluded.

The Football Association (FA) confirmed the search for Southgate’s successor is underway. “We aim to have our new manager confirmed as soon as possible,” stated FA chief executive Mark Bullingham.

He further stated that the FA has “an interim solution in place if it is needed” and will not comment further on the process until a new boss is appointed.

England’s next fixture is a Nations League clash against the Republic of Ireland on 7 September 2024.
