The flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially filed his nomination to contest the 7 December presidential election at the headquarters of the Electoral Commission (EC).
The nomination was filed on his behalf by the chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah on Monday (9 September).
Speaking after filing the nomination Asiedu Nketiah called on the Electoral Commission to address concerns raised by the party concerning the electoral process.
“We hope the Commission will listen and listen to us very well,” Asiedu Nketiah said.
The 2024 presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was the first to file his nomination on Monday.
Speaking briefly after filing his nomination on Monday (9 September), Bawumia expressed confidence in securing victory in the December polls.
“Historically, I think Ghana is in a very enviable position as far as the conduct of elections is concerned. And I believe that madam chair and your team will live up to it. But let’s pray and continue to pray for God’s blessings for the Electoral Commission.”
Four other candidates, Hassan Ayariga of the All People’s Congress (APC), Samuel Apea-Danquah of Yellow Ghana, independent candidate George Twum Barima Adu, and Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar have all filed their nominations.
Meanwhile, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission Jean Mensa said the EC will immediately subject the nomination forms to scrutiny.
“As part of the Commission’s effort to ensure a transparent, credible and accountable process, the Commission has developed a detailed checklist that embodies the criteria to be satisfied by presidential nominees as prescribed by law.”
“The checklist will guide the scoring and awarding of marks by teams established by the [Electoral] Commission to scrutinise and review each nomination form submitted,” she said.
