With the December 7 general elections fast approaching, the focus is not just on political campaigns and voter turnout, but also on ensuring the safety and security of the electoral process. Despite Ghana’s history of peaceful transitions, concerns over potential disruptions or violence remain prevalent.

Addressing these concerns, Dr. Pumpuni Asante, the Director of Policy Engagements and Partnerships at CCD-Ghana, has emphasized the importance of public awareness and vigilance in maintaining peace during the elections.

In a recent interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Dr. Asante stressed the need for Ghanaians to make “discerning decisions” when it comes to recognizing potential threats to the electoral process.

He explained, “So that if something is happening, they can make a discerning decision that this is above board and there is nothing going on. That is where the security problem can come in.”

The role of citizens in maintaining peace during elections cannot be overstated, especially in a time when misinformation and rumours can spread like wildfire.

Dr. Asante’s comments shed light on the importance of public awareness. If voters can correctly identify when a situation is being manipulated or distorted, they will be less likely to react impulsively or allow external forces to stir up conflict.

The idea is not just to be passively involved in the election but to actively contribute to a peaceful and orderly process.
