Development economist Dr Michael Ayamga Adongo has urged the new government not to remove the e-levy entirely.
He is proposing that the government should rather raise the threshold to Ghc 2000.
“Momo is both a poverty reduction tool and a financial service. We should not remove the e-levy entirely. Let’s raise the threshold 2000gh,” he said in a post shared via social media.
He added, “At a certain point momo becomes a financial service that should attract tax. If a wealthy guy chooses not to go to the bank but uses momo to transfer 10,000, he should pay tax”.
The John Dramani Mahama campaign promised the people of Ghana to scrap the e-levy they described as a nuisance tax.
The promise is part of John Dramani Mahama’s 120-day social contract with the people of Ghana.
Apart from the e-levy, the John Dramani Mahama administration intends to scrap betting tax, and emission tax.
