Both NDC and NPP are attempting to manipulate public sentiment to secure votes- Martin Amidu

Martin Amidu, a prominent Ghanaian politician and lawyer who previously served as the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, has expressed deep concerns regarding the ongoing political impasse between the majority and minority parties in Parliament.

This conflict intensified following a recent Supreme Court ruling that overturned an earlier decision by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, declaring four parliamentary seats vacant.

In his article titled “The Politics of Desperation for Political Power in Ghana,” Amidu asserts, “Both major parties are attempting to manipulate public sentiment to secure votes, often at the expense of the truth and constitutional integrity.”

The Supreme Court’s recent stay of execution halted Bagbin’s ruling, which affected Members of Parliament Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Amoako Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central). This ruling has sparked heated debates and accusations of political manoeuvring from both sides of the aisle.

Amidu warns that this current struggle for political dominance poses a significant threat to the 1992 Constitution, stating, “If left unchecked, this desperation risks reigniting past political conflicts that could destabilize our democracy.” He highlights the necessity for political actors to reflect on the lessons of history and to steer away from practices that could lead to chaos and unrest.

In a firm call to action, Amidu urges stakeholders to prioritize Ghana’s constitutional values and the well-being of its citizens above personal ambitions. “The 2024 elections must focus on integrity, policy, and serving the interests of the people, rather than the unrestrained pursuit of power,” he emphasizes.

Amidu, who served as Ghana’s first Special Prosecutor from 2018 until his resignation in 2020 over alleged political interference, is known for his unyielding stance against corruption.

He gained prominence in Ghanaian politics for introducing the term “gargantuan” into discussions surrounding accountability, particularly during the high-profile Woyome scandal investigation.
