The National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has criticized the recent inauguration of the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) new headquarters, commissioned by President Akufo-Addo, calling it one of the most glaring examples of misplaced priorities.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, Gyamfi expressed his dissatisfaction, stating, “Akufo-Addo has reminded us again about the Bank of Ghana square, one of the misplaced priorities.”
He further argued that it was inappropriate for the president to commission a building that was still under construction.
“Akufo-Addo gathered people to commission a three-story building that has yet to be completed,” he remarked. Gyamfi accused the president of attempting to create the illusion of accomplishment by unveiling an unfinished project, saying, “He went to commission an uncompleted building and expected us to clap for him.”
According to Gyamfi, the unveiling of the incomplete Bank of Ghana headquarters is a symbol of the pain many Ghanaians feel due to the government’s handling of the country’s finances.
He pointed to the significant financial losses incurred by the BoG in recent years, including a loss of approximately GH₵60 billion in previous years, and an additional GH₵10.5 billion loss in the last year.
Gyamfi stressed that these losses under Akufo-Addo’s leadership contrast sharply with the performance of the Bank of Ghana during the John Mahama administration.
“Under John Mahama, the Bank of Ghana made profits and used those funds to build the ‘Bank hospital,’ which many consider a safe haven,” he said.
In addition to his criticism of the BoG headquarters, Gyamfi alleged that the Akufo-Addo administration has resorted to printing money to finance its corruption and wasteful expenditure, further exacerbating the economic challenges faced by the country.
On the other hand, President Akufo-Addo, during the inauguration of the BoG headquarters on November 20, 2024, highlighted the importance of the new facility in modernizing Ghana’s financial infrastructure.
The event, attended by government officials, BoG executives, and key figures from the financial sector, saw the president praising the BoG for its commitment to innovation.
“This new headquarters will serve as the new command center for the bank’s operations, fostering innovation, collaboration, and excellence in its service to the nation,” President Akufo-Addo said.
