New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia has made a call to Ghana’s youth, urging them to vote in their numbers in the upcoming election.
Speaking at his “Jobs for the Youth” event at the Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra on Sunday (3 November), Bawumia emphasised the critical role young voters play in shaping the nation’s future.
Addressing a scepticism often shared by younger voters, he acknowledged the frustration that many feel, particularly the belief that “all politicians are the same.”
But he was quick to draw a clear line between himself and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, former President John Dramani Mahama.
“I know some of you may not be too eager to vote,” Bawumia admitted. “I do not blame you if you have bought into the view that all politicians are the same and that your vote won’t make any difference.”
“But that is not so—I can tell you that your vote can make a big difference.”
Bawumia continued, distinguishing his track record from Mahama’s. “I am not John Mahama; he is a former vice president and president. I am a vice president who has never been president before who is asking you for the opportunity to lead and show what I can do,” he said, pledging to protect the public purse.
Appealing directly to young voters, Bawumia encouraged them to remain engaged and recognise the upcoming election as pivotal.
“December is about you. December is about who can deliver for you, for your future, whom you trust, who has the integrity, the vision, the energy, the competence, the sense of where the world is today and your place in it, who has the humility to serve you and the decency not to insult you,” he said.
He also asked the youth to weigh their choice carefully, characterising the vote as a decision between “the one who had his chance and blew it” and “the other who is asking for a similar chance but to deliver with it.”
“The decision is yours to make, not to bring back what was discarded in the past but to vote for your future.” Bawumia said.
