Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed a strong commitment to prioritizing grassroots sports development in Ghana.
Earlier this year, in February, Dr. Bawumia unveiled a groundbreaking initiative during a major policy address, introducing the concept of the Ghana School Sports Secretariat.
This new entity, as envisioned by Dr. Bawumia, would be instrumental in driving sustainable sports development at the grassroots level, beginning within schools to promote both sports and education.
This vision has now been officially included in the NPP Manifesto, with Dr. Bawumia reiterating his commitment during a recent address.
He stated that, if elected, his government "will establish the Ghana School Sports Secretariat, which will be an agency under the ministry responsible for sports, in collaboration with other stakeholders such as the Ghana Education Service (GES) and sports federations."
Recognizing the longstanding challenges related to funding for school sports, Dr. Bawumia's proposal for the School Sports Secretariat aims to ensure that it receives annual budgetary allocations, fostering sustainable development. This initiative is expected to be a significant step forward, as it has been personally championed by Dr. Bawumia himself.
In addition to this, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his intention to partner with international sports organizations to position Ghana as a hub for emerging sports on the African continent.
"My government will also seek school-level collaboration with international sports bodies like the NBA and NFL to make Ghana a hub for these emerging sports in Africa, to create more opportunities for young people," he stated.
He further highlighted that Ghana has already begun exploring this path with the NFL, the governing body for American football, to introduce and expand the sport within the country.
