The Ashanti region’s Ghana National Fire Service is warning locals about the widespread attacks on firefighters and their apparatus due to response time delays.
Residents of Krofuom, a suburb of Kumasi, the region’s capital, are said to have attacked a firefighter after a fire destroyed a church and Trinity Television, a local television station.
Residents became enraged as the fire spread through properties valued at millions of cedis, forcing the firefighters to flee the physical assaults.
The 18-year-old church structure was reduced to rubble when the fire broke out on Friday, 27 December, at around 9 a.m.
Properties the building housed, including a television studio with other ancillary facilities and accessories, were destroyed.
When fire destroyed a nearby kiosk and engulfed their building, employees and pastors at the Trinity Television station and church in Krofuom-Adoe Nkwanta had just finished their morning television broadcast.
No casualties have been reported, and the cause of the fire is unknown.
