But for the oceans of write-ups in circulation by some of our people ‘campaigning’ for one MP or the other to be considered as the next Minority Leader in Parliament, I would have stayed my pen on this.
More importantly, it is not for those of us who aren’t MPs to decide or determine who should lead the party in Parliament. Those who take such a decision will do so sooner than later.
Notwithstanding these, it is important to state that quite a number of reasons account for the selection of an MP to lead a side in Parliament.
First, the person must be experienced enough to lead the pack. Out of the names being bandied about, none has that experience apart from Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin.
He had been understudying the venerable Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu as Deputy Majority Leader until he was elevated in February this year. Putting it simply, he knows the ropes of this job better than any of the names being mentioned. Who knows the parliamentary rules and standing orders better than Afenyo-Markin?
Moreover, a leader must be someone who has been in the house for a relatively long time. Someone who has been in the House for just two terms and was a backbencher until recently is not the ideal person to lead a team. Many have been frontbenchers for more than two terms. Afenyo-Markin is going for his fourth term in the House and has been a frontbencher for years.
A leader must be someone who can canoe the boat when the weather is stormy. Afenyo-Markin has shown this trait on more than a few occasions.
Sɛ Bɛkoe din fata no a, yehu no wɔ ɔko ano na ɛnnyɛ nsadwaase.
A true and great leader is seen during times and periods of crisis or adversities. That is the definition of Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin. He is a formidable rock and leader.
When the NDC wanted to use violence to take over some seats won by our candidates, Afenyo-Markin got counted. He stood up, showed leadership, battled against seemingly insurmountable challenges to get us most of those seats. None of the others who are being hyped was seen at that battleground.
In the just ended elections, Afenyo-Markin won his seat with 20,000 votes margin. Can we say the same thing about some of those asking to be given the mantle of leadership? No!
Can you downplay Afenyo-Markin’s legal acumen which has helped the party over the years? There are several cases he has either handled himself or spearheaded which have all gone in favour of the party. Which of those people are mentioning can match Afenyo-Markin in that field?
We are not going to have ‘a business as usual’ system in place in the House. We, therefore, need a leader who is tough, resilient, intelligent and capable and willing to go to every length to get results. Afenyo-Markin is that leader.
We cannot appoint inexperienced people as leaders. We can’t do experiments with the work ahead of us, and this is why we need Afenyo-Markin as our leader.
Go to his constituency and witness for yourselves the numerous developmental projects and opportunities he has brought to his people. There is none like him in the whole of the country when it comes to performance in one’s constituency. Afenyo-Markin is the man for the job. It is my utmost hope that the party and all those who matter would select him to lead us in Parliament as the Minority Leader.
It is not an easy task going against Mike Hammah, the then NDC MP, win the seat from him and maintain it for 4 terms. Nobody, let me repeat, no MP in Effutu has been able to win the seat 4 times. Only Afenyo-Markin has been able to do this. He is the man for the job.
