Military Secretary of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Air Commodore Nana Adu Gyamfi, has backed assertions by the Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, that Richard Jakpa was released dishonourably from the GAF.
Mr. Dame, while cross-examining Jakpa, submitted documents claiming that the third accused was released from the military for unsatisfactory service and failure to pass promotional exams.
In an attempt to debunk the claims, Jakpa’s lawyers subpoenaed the military secretary to testify.
Thaddeus Sory, leading Jakpa’s legal team, while questioning the military secretary on the letters, sought to suggest that Jakpa was released only based on regulations that dealt with inefficiency.
Even though the military secretary confirmed this, he explained that the release based on these terms was a result of stated misconduct by the accused, determined after disciplinary processes.
During cross-examination by the Attorney General, however, Air Commodore Gyamfi submitted two documents that were requested by Jakpa in his subpoena.
The first document was a report on the conduct of Richard Jakpa in the military. The document, as read by the military secretary, revealed that Jakpa’s conduct in the military smacked of indiscipline, lackadaisical, and unprofessional behaviour.
According to the letter from his commanding officers, he (Richard Jakpa) parked a military vehicle overnight at his home outside the barracks.
The said vehicle was detailed with a driver, but he took the vehicle together with the driver to his office, sacked the driver, and left the vehicle at his home.
As part of the stated misconduct of Richard Jakpa, he is noted to have failed to return to the military base on several occasions.
One of the instances listed included a situation where Jakpa came to Accra for training but failed to return to base.
He is also said to have taken money from a Lebanese businessman to the tune of $400 while on a mission in Lebanon but failed to refund the same.
The report further revealed that he failed to deliver some money and items that were given to him by Ghanaians in Beirut until he was instructed to do so.
Asked if any of these meant the second accused was released honourably, Air Commodore Adu Gyamfi answered in the negative.
