President Akufo-Addo has inaugurated four of the five newly constructed 40-bed district hospitals in the Ashanti Region.
The commissioning ceremony took place on Monday (25 November), further advancing efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure in Ghana.
The newly operational hospitals are located in Drobonso (Sekyere Afram Plains District), Sabronum (Ahafo Ano South East District), Twedie (Atwima Kwanwoma District), and Suame (Suame Municipal area).
Another hospital at Manso Nkwanta in the Amansie West District has been completed and is awaiting commissioning.
These hospitals are part of a broader initiative launched in 2020, when the former Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman Manu, broke ground for the construction of 12 district hospitals across the Ashanti, Eastern, and Greater Accra regions, as well as a polyclinic in Mim in the Bono Region.
The €71.5 million project, financed through Erste Group Bank AG and Česká Spořitelna a.s, was executed by VAMED Engineering GmbH of Austria.
Facilities have also been constructed in Jumapo, Kwabeng, Nkwatia, Achiase, Adukrom, Mim, and Kpone Katamanso.
Each 40-bed hospital comes with modern facilities, including an Out-Patient Department with consulting rooms, Public Health Department with a 36-seater waiting room, three antenatal consulting rooms, a counseling room, and offices for public health officers.
The others are a theatre with a surgical suite, Wards comprising an 8-bed Pediatric Ward, 8-bed Male and Female Wards, 4-bed Maternity Ward, 8-bed Labour Delivery Unit, 4-bed lying-in ward, and 2-bed recovery room.
Additionally, each hospital includes 12 units of two-bedroom semi-detached accommodation for staff to enhance their working conditions.
Speaking at the event, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and urged healthcare workers and residents to ensure the proper administration and maintenance of the facilities.
“These hospitals represent our unwavering dedication to improving the health status of all citizens. It is now up to the staff and the people to ensure these facilities serve their purpose for generations to come,” the President stated.
Dumsor legacy
The President questioned Mr. Mahama’s promises, particularly his proposal for a “24-hour economy,” drawing attention to the infamous power crisis, or “dumsor,” during his tenure.
“Today, he is staging a comeback. What is he coming to do? A 24-hour economy? You couldn’t keep the lights on for 12 hours during ‘dumsor’ when you were President, and now you are coming to give us a 24-hour economy? How are you going to do that? Please, don’t let anybody confuse you with these things,” he urged.
President Akufo-Addo also used the platform to reaffirm his government’s commitment to improving the lives of Ghanaians, emphasizing achievements in infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
