Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson has revealed that there is no timeline for the approval of the budget for the first three months of the 2025 fiscal year.
His comments follow an unexpected adjournment of Parliament, called by Speaker Alban Bagbin on Tuesday (22 October), after receiving an order from the Supreme Court to stay the execution of a previous decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.
The budget estimates for the upcoming fiscal period were a key agenda item for the House’s scheduled meeting.
However, the abrupt adjournment has left many in a state of uncertainty regarding the financial blueprint that will guide government operations in early 2025.
Speaking to journalists after the adjournment, Ato Forson indicated that Parliament may reconvene in December to approve the budget.
“We can come back in December to approve it,” he said, suggesting that a post-election session might be necessary to finalise the estimates.
“There’s no timeline; the most important thing is that the estimate in advance of our operations must be passed before 1 January. So clearly, we can come back any time after the elections to get it approved.”
